The Elders

Världsbokdagen 23 april

År 2009 fyller Världsbokdagen 14 år! Det var Unescos generalkonferens 1995 som beslutade att 23 april skulle bli hela världens festdag där man firar böcker, författare, läsning och värnar upphovsrätt och människors fria tillgång till information.

Bokens och rosornas dag

I Katalonien i Spanien har man sedan 1900-talets början firat skyddshelgonet St Görans (St Georges) dag den 23 april genom att ge en bok i gåva till dem man tycker om och få en ros tillbaka! En ros mot en bok var själva ursprungsidén!

World Book and Copyright Day

Med inspiration från denna tradition föreslog IPA, International Publishers Association en "internationell dag" och Spanien lämnade förslaget till Unesco.

Idén om att uppmärksamma boken kompletterades med upphovsrätten och i november 1995 beslöt Unesco - FN:s organisation för utbildning, vetenskap, kultur och media/ kommunikation - att utse den 23 april till the World Book and Copyright Day (Världsbok- och upphovsrättsdagen). Inte bara är den 23 april en katalansk dag, den är också minnesdag för författare som Shakespeare, Cervantes, Nabokov, Manuel Mejia Vellejo, de la Vega, Laxness, Josep Pia, Manuel Mjia Vallejo m.fl.

Upphovsrätt har länge varit en hjärtefråga för Unesco som ser dagen som ett sätt att fokusera bl.a på författarnas möjlighet till ersättning för sitt arbete i en snabbt digitaliserande värld.

At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.
